Peyton, Colorado is a small town located about 30-minutes northeast of Colorado Springs. Peyton was settled in 1888. This area was primarily a farming and mining community but also became a stop on the Chicago-based, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. Today, Peyton has become more of a bedroom community to the City of Colorado Springs. The area offers home buyers large lots with both views and privacy. Homestead Ranch Park is located at the eastern edge of the Black Forest area. This 450-acre park is maintained by the El Paso County Parks Department. This park is a nice mix of open, rolling meadows and tree-covered bluffs. The main attraction here is the spring-fed pond, which attracts a wide range of wildlife. The pond is stocked and fishing is allowed with a Colorado Fishing License. There are approximately 3-miles of trails that allow hiking, biking, and horseback riding.

The park also features Picnic Pavilions, Picnic Tables, a playground, and Playing Fields. All of this makes Homestead Ranch Park a great place to spend the day.

Maggie’s General Store & Stagecoach Liquor, Rural Peyton doesn’t have much to offer in terms of retail. This makes Maggie’s a great asset to the Peyton area. This place has a bit of everything you could ever want offering lots of local products here including honey, pickles, preserves, homemade bakery items, and even homemade crafts.

The Stagecoach liquor side of the store has a great selection of beer, wine, and spirits and the staff is super friendly and helpful. Great place to stop when you need a gallon of milk, if you live in Peyton, you’ll probably bump into friends and neighbors as well.

Reptile Food and More is located right on Hwy 24 near Judge Orr Road, this place is a reptile pet owner’s dream. The owner, Leslie is very nice and super knowledgeable, and a great resource if you have questions about your pet or if you are interested in learning more about reptiles and having them as pets.

They have all sorts of food and A wide range of accessories like a jogging vest for a ferret and a reptile leash. This is a great resource for reptile fans but it’s also a great place to stop in and look around.

Coffee Shack Brew & Q has conveniently located at the intersection of Highway 24 and the Peyton Highway this place is a great find. This place has a wide range of coffee drinks, everything you’d expect from a big city coffee shop. In addition to the coffee, they have a short but awesome menu. The breakfast burritos are a local favorite for morning commuters into Colorado Springs. If we are showing houses in Peyton, we will often stop here with clients for lunch because of the barbecue. It’s also a great place to grab a drink to re-caffeinate while showing houses.

There is some outdoor seating but the drive-thru window is super convenient, and the staff is very friendly, and this is one of our favorite pit stops in Peyton.

Paint Mines Interpretive Park offers a unique experience. The area features brightly colored bands or layers of clay that were used by American Indians to make paint, hence the name Paint Mines.

are named for their colorful clays that were collected by American Indians to make paint.

The park is located in the northeastern part of El Paso County, Colorado near The town of Calhan. The park consists of 750 acres of grassland and geological formations like hoodoos, and spires, this site is protected by law because of its extremely fragile environment.

The Paint Mines Trail is a heavily trafficked 3.4-mile loop that is only open to hiking. Because the delicate flora is so easy to disrupt, dogs, bikes, and horses aren’t allowed.

The Paint Mines are a great place to visit with the entire family, this place is both educational and relaxing, totally worth the trip even if you don’t live in Peyton. If you visit during the Summer months, it’s important that you be prepared. There is little shard and the Colorado Sun can be intense so, make sure to bring plenty of water, a hat, and yes, sunscreen.
