The Colorado Springs portion of the Santa Fe Trail runs along the former Santa Fe-Topeka railway line for about 16 miles. The trail’s gradual elevation gain makes it perfect for a leisurely weekend stroll. The county is responsible for maintaining the 6-foot-wide trail, which attracts all levels of cyclists as well as hikers. Many bikers even use the trail to commute from Monument to Colorado Springs. The trail is dog-friendly, but park officials recommend keeping your furry friends leashed.

Though the trail runs parallel to I-25, it is far enough removed from the interstate that you won’t notice traffic noise, and the views will take your breath away. Running from Woodmen Rd., near the heart of Colorado Springs, to Palmer Lake in Monument, you’ll see mountains and forests, bluffs, and plains. With three main trailheads and multiple access points, you can be sure to find something new to enjoy on every trip.

Mary Kyer Park is a beautiful 11-acre neighborhood park along Voyager in the heart of Northgate. In the center of Mary Kyer Park lies a beautiful water feature, complete with a duck pond and landscaped waterfalls. If you time your visit right, you might even see lotuses blooming.

The park has a 0.6-mile paved loop, making it stroller and wheelchair-friendly. The loop also connects to the La Foret trailhead, in case you are feeling like a longer stroll. Younger children will enjoy Mary Kyer’s playground, while older children may be more interested in the tennis and basketball courts. The park’s picnic shelter and multi-purpose playfields make it perfect for a neighborhood gathering or just a day out with the family.
